Facilitated by Marcin Floryan

Abstract:

As we create value through software development we are often immersed in technology and we work with people. Both are essential and inseparable. We constantly hone our technical skills to make sure we create bug-free software. We tend to expand less energy on debugging our relationships. Join this workshop to improve the humane aspect of our relationships with some deliberate practive through simple role play.

There will be two different scenarios prepared, such as can often occur in software development teams. They will include “agile” elements as its introduction and application often evokes strong feelings from people in organisations. The scenarios are based on my personal experience working in Agile environments and implementing Agile.

The approach I will suggest for improvements is based on the framework described in the “Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most”
book.

Format and length

90 minutes workshop.

Intended audience and prerequisites:

There are no technical prerequisites for this workshop. Honesty, open mind and focus on learning will be helpful. If you decide to come, I will be asking you to prepare a very short story, from your personal experience, about a difficult conversation, to share with others.

Objective(s) of the session:

  • Increase awareness of difficulties in conversations and identify sources of those difficulties
  • Consider how our own behaviour contribute to the outcome of interpersonal interactions
  • Pick up a few ideas on how to improve base on the framework from “Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most”

Benefits for participants and presenter(s):

I don’t intent to teach in this session. I aim to create an opportunity for us to practice and experience some aspects of difficult conversations in a safe and friendly environment. Two takes on the two scenarios will allow us to experience how different approach and mindset in a conversation can lead to a different outcome
